Suresh Prabhu : The Visionary

A recent entrant into Narendra Modi’s cabinet, Shri Suresh Prabhu is entrusted with a lot of hope and faith, especially after his exemplary performance in Power Ministry during Vajpayee’s regime. Rated amongst its best performers in Vajpayee government, Shri in his active political years. Considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shri Prabhu has headed many crucial assignments. A fourth time Member of the Lok Sabha from Rajapur Constituency - one of the biggest states of India - Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, is India’s newest Railway Minister. A Chartered Accountant by profession and a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Prabhu has been a repeatedly elected Member of Parliament from Rajapur as a member of the Shiv Sena (SS) political party.

As a BJP member since 9th November, 2014, Prabhu completed his high school from Sharadashram Vidya Mandir, Dadar, Mumbai, followed by a Bachelor in Commerce with Honours from M.L. Dahanukar College, Vile Parle, Mumbai. He received a Bachelor in Law degree from the New Law College (Ruparel College campus), Mumbai. A rank holder in CA exam, he has been an accomplished Chartered Accountant, Banker, Educationist, Social Worker and a Politician. He was formerly the Chairman and then the Director of Saraswat Bank, one of the largest urban co-operative Banks in India. He was appointed as the Chairman of Maharashtra State Finance Commission in 1995 and was in position for the next one year.

His political journey began in March 1996, when he contested for the first time, for Rajapur Lok Sabha Constituency on a Shiv Sena ticket. He has been Union Minister for Industries in 1996, Union Minister for Environment and Forests in 1998, Union Minister for Fertilizers & Chemicals in 1999, Union Minister of power, Union Minister of Heavy Industry and Public Enterprises & Chairman Task Force for Interlinking of Rivers (Union Cabinet Minister rank and status).

Shri Suresh Prabhu took over as Union Minister for Industry in May 1996, the tenure was short one, only 13 days. During the period efforts were made by him to create transparency in the functioning of Ministry and clearance of the pending work. As Union Cabinet Minister of Power, Shri Suresh P. Prabhu has undertaken a number of initiatives such as ‘Electricity for All by the year 2012’,’integrated Electricity bill, 2001’, Transparency in bidding and Tenders, reform-linked Memoranda of Understanding with states, Accelerated Power Development Programme (APDP) and Rural Electrification. As Minister of Environment & ForestsShri Suresh P. Prabhu’s major thrust areas included prevention and control of pollution, conservation of natural resources, regeneration and development, environment policy and law, environmental information and education, research and international co-operation.

One of the first initiatives, he took soon after his assuming charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, was in regard to environment protection and systematic improvements in the working of fertiliser companies. The fertiliser sector companies were directed to take action to achieve ISO - 14000 standards which provide for most comprehensive and stringent certification process devoted to environment protection and improvement of overall working of the company. Consequently, all the fertiliser companies have responded and have worked out a definite program for achieving certification under ISO - 14000. On the advice of the Minister, commitment to clean environment, insistence on quality and achievement of certification under ISO - 14000 have been included for the first time as MOU targets in case of MOU signing companies.

Well known for his easy accessibility to the public, which not only acts as a deterrent to the bureaucratic delays and corruption in the functioning of the Ministry, but also encourages new ideas and viewpoints, Shri Prabhu believes in listening to criticism of the Government’s policies, which he says, helps in reorienting the policies towards the greater common good. He is also a believer in people’s participation in the working of the Ministries under him, especially through the involvement of NGOs and people’s groups.

He has also collaborated with many global associations and partnerships such as - Global Water Partnership, GLOBE (UK), World Economic Forum (WEF), Global Industries Council, UN Advisor, United Nations Development Program, United Nations Industrial Development organization (UNIDO), Global Forum For Farmers, President, Strategic Dialogues, Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service, SKOLKOVO Foundation, Asia Energy Forum, United Nations Committee of Biodiversity and World Federation of UNESCO. Suresh Prabhu’s return to Union Cabinet incites hope and a fresh set of expectations especially after his stint in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government during when he won kudos for imparting a new dynamism to the functioning of the Power Ministry.
