HORTICULTURE - HARVESTING THE POTENTIAL

The August 2021 edition of Agriculture Today deliberates upon these crucial aspects of Indian Horticulture.

As we are aware, Horticulture has the potential to become one of the major drivers of growth as it is more remunerative than food grains. Fruit crops are more resilient to change in weather conditions and vegetables augment the income of small and marginal farmers. Multiple crops, vis-à-vis vegetables, fruits, flowers, herbs, ornamental or exotic plants can be planted simultaneously for more yield. The sector also enables eating a diverse and balanced diet for a healthy lifestyle.

National Horticulture Mission (NHM) has been diligently facilitating crop diversification and APEDA has been extensively promoting exports of fruits & vegetables. However, these crops require a better infrastructure to prevent post-harvest losses. An increased focus on horticulture will lead to escalated farm income and support nutritional food security.
