BACKGROUND

Agriculture in India provides livelihood to more than 70% of the country’s population and remains the backbone of its economy. The Agricultural Census 2015-16 classifies about 86 per cent farmers as small and marginal, which means they have less than one hectare of land for income generation.

The economies of scale and lower income potential do not permit them to invest in improved technologies, access to better inputs or credit. The problem of small farmers’ livelihood is further aggravated due to several production risks such as unfavourable weather conditions, lack of adequate use of quality inputs, poor irrigation facilities, absence of timely advisory and poor extension services. The existence of a large number of small and marginal farmers, close to 126 million makes it challenging for the government’s extension arms to reach them with new technology and farm support schemes.

This calls for a multistakeholder approach with the involvement of private and public entities who can join forces to empower farmers, with credit, extension and advisories. For the ever evolving landscape of agriculture, there is need for constant engagement of the stakeholders to understand, discuss and evolve solutions that will not only address the pertinent problems of small holder farmers but also guide them towards the path of financial security. The 1 st Summit on Hatching Hope for Economic Sustainability of Smallholder Farmers, jointly organised by Heifer International and Agriculture Today and supported by Walmart and Cargill, is an effort to address the key challenges of small holder farmers and developing pathways economic development.
